ProQuest’s platform changes

ProQuest has recently changed their platform to default all eBook links to open in EPUB format. Below is an example of what the EPUB reader looks like.

Unlike PDFs, EPUB files are reflowable — meaning their content adjusts to screen size and user preferences — and do not have consistent or reliable page numbers. The move away from PDFs as default is advantageous from an accessibility perspective but it has created significant challenges as the EPUB version and PDF versions have different page numbers.

What this means for you

Page numbers in EPUBs often do not match the page numbers used in the PDF version referred to in your assigned readings, and you may have difficulty locating the correct section of a reading when viewing the EPUB, especially where specific pages are referenced.

You may also encounter a session expired error when viewing the EPUB (solution here).

Solution: Switch to PDF version

ProQuest eBook links in your Reading List and in MyLearn will now go to the PDF version of the book, which will help you navigate to the correct page for your assigned reading.

If the book you are reading has taken you to the EPUB reader, follow the instructions below to switch to the PDF viewer. We recommend viewing the PDF format so that you can find more accurate page numbers.

  1. Click the book icon at the top right of the reader

  2. In the book detail slide-out, click the Switch to PDF button

Finding the page number

Once you're in the PDF version, you can use the page number input field at the top right to navigate to your desired page number. Note: This won't always match the true page number of the book - be sure to check the actual page number listed on the page (found either at the header or footer of each page).

Referencing

Switching to the PDF version of an eBook (see instructions above) will allow you to reference page numbers more accurately. If the PDF version is not available, you will need to reference the EPUB page numbers, which is often displayed as a page rage in the EPUB reader. Please see our Referencing Tool for an example of how to reference a page range from an eBook.
