Q. Where do I start my essay or report?
The starting point to writing a good essay is to have a good understanding of the topic or question.
Look for any task (or instructional) words, such as 'discuss', 'explain' or 'evaluate’. Task words define what you are expected to do in your assignment. You should also find the content words and the limiting words, which specify the focus and scope of the task.
If you are unsure about the meaning of any of the task or instruction words in the essay/report question, please refer to page 8-10 of the Academic Writing Guide.
